This weekend we're supposed to be having a bit of a heat wave after maybe three or four weeks of cooler temperatures and a couple storms, and I was wondering if this would be a productive time to go looking for snakes. More along the lines of larger species like Gophers, Rubber Boas, Kings, and the like rather than smaller Ringneck or Sharp-Tailed Snakes (some garters would be nice though).
The normal temperatures here for this time of year are like 50s/60s during the day and 40s at night, but in the next few days we're going to have temperatures in the 70s and 80s. Is this enough to bring the snakes out of hiding? I went herping at a good location a few days ago, but the temperatures were in the low 50s and I only saw lizards basking on what little sunlight there was (Western Fence, Western Skinks, Alligator Lizards). Didn't find any snakes underneath cover either.
Once wild snakes go down for the winter (which I suspect they have), do they stay down until the spring? Or will they come back up to the surface when the weather gets nice and warm for a few days like it is now? Looking forward to any advice/opinions.
