I have always used cypress(& even eucalyptus...) They sell natural versions (without the color)at almost all home improvement store. I have never had a problem at all. And you can also get cheaper versions of the 'reptibark', i think its called, there too, normally sold as orchid bark, or labeled for potting orchids. It is actually just chopped up fir tree bark I believe.
There is no real reason I know of to spend that kind of money @ the pet stores (though someone may have one...) Just make sure to get the stuff that has no chemical treatments and no color added...
