wood chips/shavings for mice

My family owns a tree removal business and I was wondering if I could use the wood chips as the substrate for my breeding colony of mice I am starting. I figured it would cut down on cost, and thats what breeding your own feeders is all about, saving money. Let me know if you think this will work. Also when a male and female breeds, how long after the breed will the female have pups? Is it okay to feed them dog food?
