Let me take a whack at this question...
Originally Type 1 referred to Colombian aneries.
Type 2 were (and still are) Central American.
More recently some lighter colored Nicaraguan aneries popped up and to diferentiate between these and the darker ones, the new ones were called "Type 1"
Type 1 aneries are easy to pick out:
Type 2 aneries are much darker, Sonorans being the darkest of all, I believe:
Here's a Type 2 Nicaraguan (on the left). The fellow on the right is a normal until he proves otherwise:
Type 1 Nicaraguans generally have a lighter base color, and not nearly as much black in the tail. Some look a bit like ghosts (in my opinion):
I realize it's not the best picture...he was in his dark phase the day the picture was taken, but I think you can see the difference.
As far as anyone knows, type 1 Nicaraguans and Type 2 Nics are not compatable. Vin Russo proved that to be the case so far.
As far as Type 1 Colombians and Type 1 Nics or Type 2, I don't think anyone knows that yet.
There is a theory of incompatablilty with Type 2 Nics and Colombian albinos, because of the difficulty in producing Blizzards.
On a side note...I think some confusion with Central American aneries has a little to do with quite a few that were mislabled from the start. I believe that there are a lot of normals that were sold as aneries...not necessarily because of bad business practices, but because many people do not know what they are looking at. It would be easy to sell some adult C.A. as aneries. Take the normal guy in the above photo, or this girl:
I couls easily market her as an anery. Nearly every time I post her picture, I get "nice anery" comments. She's not an anery. Just a normal. I think critters like this have helped to muddy the genetic waters....
