obtain a few throat culture kits from your vet. It is a sterile cotton swab in a sterile tube. They are pretty cheap and he can tell you how he prefers the sample to be preserved prior to analysis. Just swab the mucous up in the back of the throat taking care not to allow the swab to touch anything else before placing it back in the tube.
