I would say "maybe" a year. A 40L with appropriate hides would be fine for an adult. I have 3 40L's that are my corns tanks now since I've gone to a rack system. However I did keep hatchlings in them to start since I had hides on the hot and cool ends and never had a problem. As long as they have a snug place to go dissapear they are fine.
