Why bother dividing it in half? I'd bet two young juveniles would be fine together as long as they have some extra hiding places. Then after a year and a half or so pick up another 40 gal or equivalent size and separate them. I can't imagine keeping a single adult in anything less than a 40 gal, or about 36X16.
