I personally have always been a Canon person, granted there are tons of great cameras out there and you can get awesome shots with each as long as you learn about the camera your using. I use a Canon D10 and D50 SLR, I mainly shot with a 55-200mm or a macro lens. As for lighting I recenlty bought a light cube and it really works wonders for picture taking, it makes your subjects bright but not too bright If you are shooting a dark snake you normally want to go with a lighter background, and if you are shooting a lighter snake a darker background works very well. Also if you are using a SLR look into info of F-stops and focus, if you focus on darker parts of an animal vs lighter spots it will change the whole outcome of the picture.
