You just got him so he is still stressed and its a new enviroment so he is really stressed. Give him some time. Also I hope that 55 gallon tank is just temporary and that you are working on building him a new cage/pond because at 24" that is to small. He will have trouble turn around and not have much room at all which will also add to the stress. I hope you have the room for a gator and didnt buy on a impulse ( not being mean just dont know your background in reptiles or anything )
