I would handle it about once a week. I don't like to handle babies before feeding, or a day or two after. When they get excited like that it can cause them to regurgitate.
When you do handle them, do not try to restrain it, but instead let it crawl from hand to hand or try to get it to twist thru your fingers. Typically after a few minutes of this it will settle down. If you try to restrain it it will only try harder to get away.
