Heat tape and heat cord is good at providing supplemental heat, not main ambient temps.

It does well for making a hot spot, or bringing ambient temps a few degrees, but it is not good at bringing ambient cage temps up 10 degrees or more.

Heat tape is best when your room is in the low 80's, and you want a 90-92 hot spot (for a typical python setup).

When room temps are in the 70's, you are asking the heat tape to do something that a room heater is supposed to be doing.

And tangent to that, it can also be greatly affected by the placement of your probe : )
