Hi Chris,
Catalyst is like that for polyester resin - they give you a very small amount (like tablespoons) that is enough for a qt of Repti-Shield.

Regarding leveling out: It does not level out on its own well at all. The person applying the product has to ensure a level application. And as mentioned time is a factor, so it is best to get one area the way you want it and move on and not come back to that area.

I tried a thin coat, a thick coat and two coats. Thus far, the thin coat seems sufficient to hold up to lots of abuse, so I don't think more is necessary. I can envision a second coat at seams in the cage, but I haven't tried that.
