The scrub python group was revised in 2000 into five distinct species. The large Australian amethystine python is now the Australian Scrub python Morelia kinghorni. The true amethystine python is now the smaller species Morelia amethystina from Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. It's hard anymore not to refer to the Australian species as the amethystine.
