Stephen,
....There are lots of jobs available in some fields. Hospitals are still paying bonuses to nurses. My hospital recently offered me a bonus just to switch from part time to full time for a couple months. You could get a degree in almost anything related to health care and be pretty sure of finding a good job. There is still a shortage of teachers in many parts of the country. Law enforcement and security jobs are in demand in some areas. The military is always hiring and the education benifits could be your ticket to a great career. Get the right education and you should be recession proof for a decade. During that decade you should be getting more education because the world is changing rapidly. The great job this year may be gone in a few years. I went back to college when I was 40. It is never too late for someone to get a first or second or even third degree so that they do not have to worry about job security. I have credits from six different colleges. If I was not ready to retire(I am 56) I would be taking more classes right now.
....I still have a few BRBs to sell. I am too attached to them to get busy and post ads for them. I had litters late in 2008 and had a bunch of them when it was too cold to ship. I advertised them in january at low prices expecting sales to be soft. To the contrary sales went very well but I had to hold them for people in the northern states. I am still holding a few waiting for warmer weather. I have sold some of the best ones for premium prices locally in the last month. I think many people have held off on big purchases and are staying closer to home. Because they are spending less big money they have money available for their pets and so the snake market is currently doing okay. A friend who has a store that sells salt water fish told me that his business is going well with good sales this year.
....Most of us see this recession as a bad thing, which it is. But just like in every recession before this one and even the depression in the 30s there are some people who can see the big picture and do well. Ten years from now there will be people who make millions because they invested in the right thing today.
