I first met Ron Markel in 1977 in California where he lived at the time. I was stationed there in the Army. I have many fond memories field collecting with him. He was always so enthusiastic about collecting herps and very animated at times when he would get excited.

I remember once hunting rosy's near Lake Hemet. We were driving in his brand new pick up truck after some heavy rains. We came to a place in the road where a large body of water was moving across the road. It looked shallow enough and after much debate we decided to go for it. Well...about half way into it we felt his truck lose traction and start moving sideways! All I remember was him saying "holy sh_t!" and several other choice words. Just as we were about to float off the road sideways his wheels got a bite and off we went.

Another time we were hunting rosy's and he went up one side of this rock hill and I went up the other. If you have ever been out there then you know what I mean when I say "rock hill"! About 4 hours later I was at the top with 3 large rosys in the bag weighing about 15 lbs! I was sitting on a rock waiting for Ron to make it up. As he was climbing up, face dripping sweat, he asked if I did any good? I said only 3 how about you? As his eyes were bugging out all he said was "I didn't see jack sh_t"! You should have seen him sputter!

Anyways, I was glad to see Ron again when I moved to Texas and just as sorry to see him drop out of site.

Ron, if you read this...peace dude!

Stu
