The Humane Society of the United States is the nation’s largest and most successful animal protection organization. We operate four animal sanctuaries around the country and provide more support (financial and otherwise) for local animal shelters than any other organization – more than $6 million in direct grants in 2007 as well as training and support.



In 2008, we rescued and/or cared for 70,460 animals. We were formed 55 years ago to end animal cruelty that occurs on a national scale. Local animal organizations serve their communities very well and we encourage people to support them. The HSUS is very active in Georgia, particularly on anti-dogfighting efforts. We run a program designed to reach out to youth to end dogfighting in Atlanta. We are rated a four-star charity by Charity Navigator and meet all applicable Standards for Charity Accountability according to the BBB Wise Giving Alliance.



We have more than 450 staff members working hard every day to help animals. Our undercover investigations last year revealed mistreatment of downed dairy cows slaughtered for consumption by school children and uncovered ties between national retail chain Petland and puppy mills. We have spared hundreds of thousands of baby seals from being killed in Canada for their fur. We receive no government funding for these programs. It is only through the support of millions of Americans who agree with our mission and trust us with their contributions that we are able to conduct our campaigns and programs like the ones in Atlanta and across the country.
