Pump and dimmer switch?

Sorry people, I am not much of an electrical expert that is why I would like to ask my question before I do something dumb. I have a 24-Watt 250-gph waterpump that I would like to use for a waterfall for a 136 gallon custom dart frog enclosure. The pump only has an electrical chord with no on/off switch or any device to adjust its speed. My question is: Could I use a damper switch (designed for incandescent lights) with 600 Watts capacity with my waterpump? I could connect the wires I just wanted to know if this setup would work. Thanks to all who respond!
