OK, you made it much easier being the first snake I "purchased"!! Like most of us I was catching critters from the time I was able to. Snakes, fogs, lizards, turtles and bugs of all kinds. Was never allowed to keep any of the reptiles as a kid.
My first purchased snake was a Burmese python I named Annie. Bought her as a hatchling back in 1987 for $189. Kept her for several years until my wife and I were ready to have our first child and decided a large constrictor in the house with a small baby was not a good idea. Got lucky and found another keeper that had a male and wanted to breed them so...
That led to a BP, a Corn and then I saw pics of BRB's in a book and had to have them. My first BRB's were back in 1988 and have had them ever since. My first Boa was a BCI I picked up from EBV as a B-Day present from my wife in October of 1989 - Elvira. Elvira stayed a pet all her life, she passed away in 2006 at 17 years old.
>>Do you guys remember the first snake you purchased? The type of snake, where you got it, how much it cost etc... As I watch my collection grow I was thinking back this morning about my first snake that ended up leading me where I am now.(story time bare with im no jeff lol now hes a great story writer) Anyways I purchased my first snake about 20yrs ago give or take a couple of months I know it was summer time. I had seen her for sale many times as she was always in the pet store window I walked by everyday on my way to and from school. It was one of those pet stores that had kittens and puppies, fish and birds and then there was her. She was the biggest snake I had ever seen (at that time for a 9yr old lol).
>>She was almost four ft and she was a sweetheart for being w/c.
>>Well I had finally saved up enough lawn mowing money to go buy her and just like todays pet stores that dont know a whole lot about reptiles (or was just trying to make some money off a clueless little girl at the time) told me ALL the stuff I needed to take care of her. First I needed a 15 gal tank i needed bedding,a heat light, a heat rock and a water dish. Needless to say I got everything he said I needed and her. Took her home and got her all set up. I was the happiest kid at that moment Three or four days go by and she no longer is active like she was when I first got her I started to worry I stopped in to ask the guy if that was how she was suppose to be. He said yeah that snakes are like that.I told him when I took her out she felt warm. He said warm? Hmmm and I bought a smaller watt heat bulb.Went home switched bulbs. She looked hot i put some cool water in a tiny water dish (that now I know was WAYYYY to small for that size of a snake)She went over to it and kind of curled around the dish. Well to make a long story short I ened up losing her about a month after I got her too much heat she couldnt soak no humidity all and all a sad but very learning experiance and not once did the man at the pet store say she needed to be sprayed or that heat rocks are BADDDD he was the one that sold it to me. But anyways does or should I say CAN anyone remember thier first snake and what happened to it or if you still have it? Hope to read about others first snake experiance. And thanks for reading mine. ----- Thanks,
Dave Colling
