Mark, you can do this with a box with a moderately tight fitting lid (NOT sealed that would explode) and a perforated margarine tub filled with a small bit of dry ice. as it melts CO2 will be released and your critters will die quickly and humanely. Keep in mind that co2 is heavier than air so it will displace the air in the box. I am a biologist and we do an adapted version of this in the lab to whack our mice.
