I'm definitely not keeping him. As pretty as he is, garter snakes just arent on my "to do" list. I do like having him around though so I think he'll go right back into the garden. I really don't mind if he helps himself to a mouse now and then. My only worry is that after he eats, he's too big to leave the mouse cage. I'm afraid the other mice in the cage will eat him!
