Sounds normal to me. A male will not mate with a female unless she's giving off signs. IMO the female releases pheromones to attract a male. I think in captivity since the male is already in close proximity, he shows up before she's actually ready. Makes sense that she starts to atract a mate before she's actually ready to give him time to come accross her scent trail and follow/find her. Then the malke is attempting to mate while the female may not be allowing it to happen (just like people ) Once the female is receptive, ba-da-bing

And yeah, mating comes with some level of stress. Are my scales all straight? Does he think I'm pretty? Will he respect me in the morning or go on his merry way looking for another fling?
