Not knowing your level of experience I have to ask, are you sure it is not a Soft-shelled Turtle? Native to the U.S. and commonly kept as pets. Not rare or expensive.
A photo would be helpful. What size is it? Can you describe it?
You should probably repost this on one of the appropriate Chelonian forums, if you haven't already.
