Hello I live Rhode Island and have built three different rooms.
First room was using the reflective with the seems taped shut. Excellent for the amount of space but looked like a space ship.
My second room was made using a thermal barrier. Basically building the room twice, one inside the either allowing little to no heat loss.
Third and final set up is the basement in my home now. I use R11 insulation with 1/2in yellow board drywall(antifungal, high humidity restitance) for the the walls. They are 4inches off the outer wall using metal studs.(no mold) I also have redirected two heating ducts into the room for heat that can be shut off during summer so no a/c gets down there. I also keep two 400w Radiant heat panels(400sqft coverage each) that I bought online tethered to Herpstat controller as extra source of heat as needed. (havent needed yet) For the ceiling I went with R30 for between the floor joyces and drop ceiling 1/2 thick tiles about four inches of the joyces.
Overall the Room measures out to 1000sqft with plumbing and three 20amp breakers just for the room. Ambient Temp during summer 72-75 during the day. During winter ambient 68-70. Hope this helps.
Using both insulation on the walls is not a good idea due to the walls need to breath.
