the shrew was pretty small so i doubt twisted intestines was the problem. i gently and slowly rolled the shrew out with my thumb, the snake was trying to regurgitate it anyway, only it seemed he didn't have the strength to get it out (he was pretty limp and just barely moving). there was no blood and the shrew was only slightly digested, to where hair just started to come loose. shrews eat mainly bugs so if it ingested poison, it was most likely from insecticides. it's possible, but i'm not positive that this was the culprit either because the shrew was relatively fresh (gut contents intact).
i guess you're right, only a necropsy will tell me for sure, but i'm saving my pennies for more feeders. it just seemed weird how it died suddenly with no signs of damage. if it felt strong enough to eat (probably only the day before), what could have deteriorated him so rapidly?
thanks for your insight and compassion.
