I'm gonna agree with Joe. Your animal looks to be thayeri to me also. Thayeri can go through ontogenetic changes as they grow. The yellow bands simply dirtied up. Sometimes that happens in ones with the lighter ground colors.
And greeri and thayeri are not the same thing. They are "cousins" so to speak. Both are subspecies of lampropeltis mexicana. Read up on Sierra Herps as Joe suggested, it will help you understand the differences better. ----- God Bless Evolution.
