This should at least be a wake-up call to responsible folks in the trade to start putting pressure on others to make sure they are running a tight ship. It sucks that one or two bad apples can spoil it for the whole bunch but that's what's happening and we need to pressure those bad apples."
I see the whole ENP Burmese Python issue as not so much of an ecological problem, but more of an opportunity for animal rights activists to alarm the public to further their own agenda, i.e. banning the keeping of all animals as pets. Furthermore, I see the animal rights strategy being one of "divide and conquer", where pet owners are led to blame each other for what's happening, instead of the real enemy, which is HSUS, PETA, Defenders of Wildlife, etc.
I agree there a few bad apples in the pet trade and there is a need for some of the bad apples to become more responsible pet owners, but I believe most of the bad press and legislative actions we are now seeing is because of the spreading of propaganda and vilification of pet owners, and political lobbying, by large, wealthy, well organized animal rights organizations.
