Manufactured cages are fantastic - functional, light-weight and do not succumb to moisture. And at least for the 4ft models, price is very fair.

Wood cages are fun to build, and you can taylor the size and heating to just what you want. But you need tools, a workplace, etc. And don't forget, wood cages need to be sealed, and the best products for that are not cheap.

When you add it all up including time spent, I don't think financially wood is better. Certainly pursue it if you want to create your own design - that is a good thing. Just do not think manufactured cages are necessarily super expensive in comparison.
