Very hard call as it was found as a small neonate in a base housing area. We'll never know the specific circumstances but I have since learned that a number of "outsider" herps have been found at Pendleton including sidewinders (plural). With the proximity to Twentynine Palms, Irwin, Chocolate Mountains, MCAS Yuma, Goldwater, Nellis and other desert reservations, it's no surprise to me that stuff gets moved from point A to B and perhaps left behind (or lost) during deployments, moves, etc. All those young men and women, bound to be some reptile enthusiasts in the mix. Maybe not the most ecologically tuned folks but enthusiasts none-the-less...
