i think this locomotion stems from their long history of hanging around & in burrows where they can retreat backwards as well as to get to & pin a food item against the burrow wall w/ their lower third. i have a very large crumbley red that will grasp & constrict food w/ her tail only on occassion. pretty weird looking.......
