The floor of the cage has a very thin layer of soil with wire underneath to prevent them from digging out. The winter retreat and nest box have a special mixture of dirt 18"-24" deep to nest in. They are slightly elevated but not to a great extent..SEEMS TO BE WORKING WELL SO FAR...
