The letters that are accumulating especially ones like the one from Kevin McCurley need to somehow find their way into Obama's hands. The industry needs to get his attention and work downwards from there. The Obama family seems to be full of "First's", doing things that no presidents family has ever done before. Most of what they do seem to be shocking to the nation at first. Maybe if we could even get Obama, his son, daughter or even wife to have something like a Boa Constrictor as one of the family pets, then maybe a lot of the hype could turn in a better direction. I mean come on.. The guy is from Chicago isn't he?
Obama needs to be invited to attend the NARBC summit at Tinley Park to see first hand what is at stake here, even if he only slinks in during the set-up on Friday. All of the heavy hitting breeders should be there and he could see first hand what kind of capital expenses we are talking about and how many of these people would be put out of business if the bill passed. We need to get him there and get a few press pictures oh him with a boa constrictor in his hands maybe and get him saying something like "This isn't so bad, I don't see what all of the hype in Florida is about".
I know there are a lot of people that are already slinking into the shadows in fear that even their involvement would put them on a so called "First Hit List" should the bill pass. I say that is just nuts. Anyone wishing to make a list would already include any of the names from the letters that were sent, petitions that were signed or they may have already done a search on this forum. Big name breeders like NERD, BoaPhile and Pete Kahl, Dave and Tracy Barker and Importers like Ben Siegel and Tom Crutchfield just to name a few would already have hit those lists. If the big names go then probably so does our industry.
Everyone from the biggest breeders to the guy in the corner with one Boa Constrictor needs to be in attendance at the Tinley Park Show! There needs to be tables with petitions to sign to stop S373. These petitions need to be signed by everyone that walks through the doors to the event. It would probably help if the people signing the petitions were asked to put down what their primary occupation so we could get a better sampling of what people that own reptiles actually do for a living. Even if the person signing the petition doesn't currently own a reptile but is thinking about owning one in the future, they need to sign that petition. This event needs to be an ultra high exposure event! Period! I'm even going to try to get my other family members to go to sign any petitions since they inevitably were exposed to these animals thru me without any negative impact.
I would urge those that live in Illinois to contact their senators and representatives and invite them to attend Tinley Park to see just what is at stake. Even the boost that the local economy would see from the weekend event will be curtailed by passing S373! I'll bet nobody has added that to any expense loss lists yet.
