don't worry.... ignorance is totally treatable..... it is stupidity that is a terminal.
Saddle or blotch counts are usually given snout to vent, but caudal saddles can also be noted depending on text.
I urge anyone who is interested in Pituophis to get on line and order Stull's graduate paper on the subject. It is old, dated, and has a few flaws but you can get it super cheap and stuff like saddle counts, scale counts, etc., never change, making this an invaluable resource.... And pay homage to one of the greats regarding the genus Pituophis!!!!!!
Not so long ago it was hard to come by ( I once paid $100 for a hard bond copy with a hand written letter by Olive herself ), but now that they have reprinted it you can get a copy cheap!
