You can't go wrong with the Apex headlamp. But be aware there are two styles, one runs on AA batteries, and the pro runs on the more expensive and harder to find CR123 style battery.
Also, you should consider the Fenix HP10 headlamp. It is newer to the market so not many people have used it. However the ones that have can say nothing but great things about it. And for the record I have used an Apex headlamp for years, but will likely get a HP10 this spring myself.

But either way, Apex or Fenix you will get a great headlamp, just make note of what kind of battery you will be feeding it. I like the AA style myself even though they may not run as long on a set of batteries because AA's are easy to get your hands on than the CR123 and far cheaper as fuel.
And while you are getting the headlamp do not overlook a good flashlight. They put out more light and used with a headlamp you wash away the shadows by having two light light sources from different angles. In my opinion this works much better than a stubby type setup and you do not have to lug around that giant 12 volt battery.
