oak vaneer plywood for an enclosure

I want this cage to look halfway decent(have yet to do anything decent).I have a choice of plywood,Oak vaneer and Birch and plain old cheap plywood at 20 bucks a sheet.

The birch was more expensive then the oak.I can get a 4x8 sheet of 3/4 Oak for 40 bucks.Will this stuff work?

Would I need to stain this or just put a poly type product on it?

How would I finish this out?

I priced the polyethylene and it was super expensive at around 40/50 bucks a gallon.Is that right?
