san diego gopher

I recently added a san diego gopher to my collection, bought him/her at a reptile show in noblesville, in. I wonder if a got an unusual snake or what? It has personality , most of my collection tolerares being held but saying they enjoy it would be a stretch. this gopher snake stands up hisses and rattles its tail to protest being botherd, but as soon as i grab it, it settles rightdown. is this normal behavior for this species?
