Get a copy of Conant's field guide, study the sections on the herps you're interested in, and go for it! Louisiana has some great herpetofauna, but in fairness, few people are going to tell you where they herp, you have to seek out your own places. Best of luck, it's always good to see someone getting into the field, you learn so much more there than anywhere else!
