I haven’t had accessed to the internet for a few days (I was writing a letter to the Commission, thank you), so its interesting to follow the realization dawning. The frog and turtle ban applying only to the food industry did seem a little too good to be true.

The commission and the department do appear to be sneaking these legislative attacks through. Doug P, Steve A. and I accidentally stumbled onto the proposed turtle and frog ban at the February commission meeting. And we only went to that meeting because we got word the day before that the commission was looking to add beaded lizards to the 671 list of restricted species.

With out spending a lot of time of the turtle and frog situation, I would like to encourage everyone to take action right now. The CDFG and the commission are preparing to change the 671 list to include all members of the genus Heloderma. This would include the Mexican beaded lizard. Currently beaded lizards are unrestricted in the State of California to possess, sell, import, trade, breed, transport, etc. But if the commission and the CDFG are allowed to change the listing, that’s it. You can’t have one. No one in California can have one.

While that might not seem to have much effect on some of you, for them, its one down. Frogs and turtles next, And the snakes and lizards to go.

As Mike L pointed out in the below discussions. First they got the mammals and we sat quietly. Then the birds. Now its our turn. If they get beadeds on the list, its going to be their first victory. And they’ll be more than willing go after the rest.

I would like to encourage everyone out there to write the commission. They plan to accept the changes to 671 adding the beaded lizard to the list at the next meeting in April. That doesn’t leave much time. If we can put up enough of a fight now, with this one animal, then we stand a better chance when they start the next battle.

Please write the commission. And if possible, attend the April meeting
