Substrate is always a hard one to get a good grip on because so many worry about their guys eating it, and getting impacted, for this reason things like sand, small pebbles, etc are passed over many times. But in nature these lizards are found in a myriad of dry scrub and dry forest, and there fore live on a myriad of different substrates like Sand in nature.I always find it better to try to go as natural as possible, so I use a dry, rocky sand and clay mix that is very close to what is found in their natural habitat and I scatter large rocks over this that my Beardie can climb and perch on and my guy loves it.
Basking Temps is a hard one, for in reality there is no correct catch all proper Temp, because all Beardies are different and prefer different things. I prefer to give them a choice, mine has three basking areas, one is 105, the other 90, and the other just has a Repti-Sun 10.0 tube light over it and maintains at around 85 degrees, and what I have found is that he prefers the cooler one and bask more often underneath the Repti-Sun instead of the hooter Basking light and 150 watt MVB I have for him. Its all about choices.
