I lived in Lawton, OK for almost 4 years. I was stationed at Ft. Sill. I would say it is my favorite herping spot in the whole U.S. If you haven't gone yet then I suggest going on Ft. Sill (if it is still an open post that is)...you will not be let down. I found the most successful method for herp collecting on post was driving the back roads (all paved) right around dusk...even a little after dark. They come out to the road to warm up just before their evening hunting starts. I have found too many snakes to mention this way: Western Daimondback Rattlers, Western Massasaugas, Copperheads (beutiful colors), Bullsnakes, Speckled Kings, Emory Rats, Texas Rats, Prairie Kings, Diamondback Watersnakes, Checkered Garters, Knight Snakes, Kansas Glossys, etc, etc. If you go mid day then a sure thing is to visit the old rifle ranges to the east of highway 44. Snakes will pursue rodents that live in the cement foxholes and never get back out. I would routinely run weekly rescue missions out there to save weary trapped snakes. I was hoping to find a Central Plains Milksnake while I lived there, but that never happened. Good luck you and let me know how you did.
