I use one or two external flashes. If I'm using one, I get it off the camera with a TTL cord and hold it slightly to the side of the subject. I've also done some multiple flash shots this year using nikon's CLS system. One flash mounted on the camera acts as a commander and as a fill flash (to get rid of harsh shadows). The other flash is set off to the side of the subject. I use a headlamp to illuminate the subject for focusing. I often wrap the headlamp strap around one of the flashes.
