I haven’t seen any Western Pond Turtles in a few years. I think the last time was when I was in school. 5 years ago or so down near Eugene, OR. Every turtle I see these days seems to be the non-native red-eared slider. It’s sad.
I looked up the pond turtle range, and this is what Wikipedia had to say. I live in the Puget sound area now. Funny coincidence.
“As of 2007, they have become rare or absent in the Puget Sound area. They have a disjunct distribution in most of the Northwest, and some isolated populations exist in southern Washington. Pond Turtles are now rare in the Willamette Valley north of Eugene, Oregon, but abundance increases south of that city where temperatures are higher.”
