I've found them in forest (2-3 times maybe?) up in colorado, and the one I found while in south texas was using a den up on a rock face in a forest and was a very unhappy camper...never seen one not someplace where it could go vertical, which is weird because looking at them they sure don't *look* like great climbers but oh well.
