Owner Cited For Having Burmese Pythons
The Nebraska Humane Society said it now has three large snakes that were taken from a flooded-out home in King Lake.
On Tuesday, investigators with the humane society were called to 5620 North 244th Street in King Lake on the report of an 11-foot python on the loose. When they arrived at the house, they found three large Burmese python snakes inside the residence.
The owner of the snakes, Randy Walker, 39, was cited for three counts of harboring a non-domestic animal. Investigators said Walker refused to turn over the snakes to the humane society without a valid search warrant.
NHS investigators and deputies with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office returned Friday with a search warrant and confiscated the three snakes, ranging from 9 to 10 feet and each weighing 25 pounds. The NHS said fully grown, the snakes could reach 20 feet in length.
It is illegal in Omaha to own non-venomous snakes that can reach of length of 8 feet or more at maturity, investigators said. King Lake falls within the jurisdiction of Omaha city codes.
