This concerns the H.B.1354 Louisiana herp law. We have kept up with this as my wife and I live in Louisiana. A year or so back we talked to a man who runs a pet store near us and he was the first person ever who told us about having to permit any snake over 8 ft long, and that was a city ordinance for Bossier I believe. At that time we had not even heard of a permit requirement for snakes on the state level that were over twelve feet in length. We have looked for this requirement on the state fish and game website numerous times under every concievable name, and were unable to find it listed on the state fiah and game website. If you search a little bit in the national fish and game site, it is vaguely covering boas and no mention of pythons. petsnake.com had the rule listing on it's website. My question is this...If you are going to have a rule concerning permit requirements for large constrictors, Why is it not listed on the governing body's website that is in charge of giving out said permits? Was this a quiet way to eventually catch someone who was illegal and stupid such as the people in Oakdale, and then run a new overkill bill through the house? I have lived in Louisiana all my life. I have hunted and fished here. I have never seen the permit requirment listed on any fish and game literature either. Can someone tell me what gives, or possibly use this in an arguement against the passing of the current amendments to the bill in question? If you don't post a rule for people to follow in the open, won't that cause people to make an honest mistake? How can so many people be punished for the indifference of two individuals in Oakdale? The way I see it, the law was enforced on those two individuals, and it worked pretty well in catching them in the middle of some horrible acts, as well as in keeping with the current permitting laws. What justification do lawmakers have to change the rules in the middle of the game when this law was just proven to work? That's something else I can't understand. Oh well. I hope this was not too long of a post, and made some sense to somebody.
