BIRMINGHAM NEWS (Alabama) 25 June 10 Young gator confiscated in west Jefferson County (Carol Robinson)
A young alligator was confiscated by Jefferson County lawmen Thursday night after they received information the reptile was being illegally kept as a pet.
Sheriff's deputies got a tip about the gator at a home in the 400 block of Sheppard Lane in the Providence area, said Chief Deputy Randy Christian.
The alligator, about 2 feet long, was being kept in a makeshift pen.
The Alabama Department of Conservation was called in to take over the investigation.
Possession of an alligator is against the law in Alabama.
The owner will likely face misdemeanor charges that carry a fine but no jail time.
The alligator was being relocated to an appropriate habitat, Christian said.
"I have a good friend that says if it doesn't come when you call its name it isn't a pet. I tend to agree with that,'' Christian said. "The trouble with baby alligators is they turn into full grown alligators. I can see that being a problem." Young gator confiscated in west Jefferson County
