Im backing off aspen or anything that they could ingest. What is the proper medium?
There is no "proper" medium per se as different things work for different people but I've been using rabbit pellets for over 15 years with great success. For one, if they should ingest any of it, it's digestible so as not to cause any type of impaction. It clumps like cat litter when they defecate as well as absorbs so everything pretty much stays dry and it's easy to spot clean. Depending on where you buy it, it can be fairly cheap if you buy it from a feed store instead of a pet store.
A couple of things that are not conducive to using rabbit pellets is if you live in an extremely humid environment as rabbit pellets do have a tendency to develop mold when damp or when they get wet. They are also much heavier than a comparative tub full of wood shavings. They can also tend to be "dusty" (residual breakdown of pellets) especially at the bottom of the bag, so it's usually a good thing to use a strainer basket to remove the smaller particles.
But like I said, I've used them for kingsnakes and corn snakes for over 15 years with success and I've kept my Westerns on them for the last 4+ years successfully as well.
