I guess that soft shell really does make a big difference. It's usually very difficult to tell whether a bird egg is live or dead without candling -- unless it explodes, which unfortunately does happen sometimes.
If my incubator had a temp spike, I'd candle the eggs immediately and then probably a few days later to check for continued viability of the embryos. But of course I only incubate bird eggs, not herps! ----- ----
