Robyn,

Were the females that laid the longer eggs smaller or skinnier than the female that laid the clutch of nine?

I've noticed that some younger and skinnier females will lay longer and fewer eggs, and that older bigger, females will lay larger clutches with shorter rounder eggs. You've gotta fit that baby in there somehow and longer skinnier eggs seems like a good way to do it.

I'd be interested to know the weight difference between an average egg in the clutch of nine and one of the longest eggs.
