Python on the loose by Mary Jo Denton
PUTNAM COUNTY -- A python snake may be loose in the Burgess Falls Road area near Windowcliff Road, according to the Putnam Sheriff's Department.
It is a pet snake and apparently escaped the owner's camper on Monday, says a report by Deputy Ron Harris.
The Sheriff's Department got involved when someone in that area called and reported "a suspicious vehicle with several subjects out of the vehicle crawling on the ground," the deputy's report says.
The caller also reported it appeared that the suspicious people had a firearm.
Deputy Harris went to the area and found a motorhome with Colorado license tags parked there. Three women and a man were walking around the camper, the report says.
"They were looking for a two-foot long ball python that they believed was missing from their camper as they slept at this location overnight," the report says.
The four told the deputy they had been visiting in the area and had been to Burgess Falls on Sunday.
A warrants check showed the four were not wanted by police anywhere, and the weapon someone thought they had turned out to be "a long horn type instrument," the deputy said.
They soon left the area, but the snake was not found, he said.
Pythons are non-venomous snakes and are reportedly becoming popular as pets.
Deputy Harris notified the Animal Control officers of the incident.
