Another point about monitor care is that everyone wants a site, sheet or book specifically on the type of monitor they have. That's not really a good way to look at it. Learn about monitors in GENERAL first, then adjust to fit yours. Keep in mind that all bluespots may not act like your bluespots. They are all one species, yet individuals too.

I honestly don't know a thing about V.auffenbergi (what you have), but I can tell you that, all monitors should be given a good range of temps, whole animal diet, and plenty of places to hide. These are basics. Learn those first. You can adjust your cage later, to what your lizard uses most. How well you provide for it depends on how much attention you pay to what it uses.

Not, how many websites you read telling you how to take care of it.

Anybody can put anything they want to, on the web. That does not make them experts. I found a website where the keeper's ackies were kept in an aquarium with hampster Habitrail plastic tunnels and wheels. She has her own website, does this mean that is the right way of taking care of ackies?

If I were you, I'd read about the place they come from first. Provide materials (substrate, branches, water). Give a variety, damp dirt, dry sand, leaves, mulch, etc. Give them time to get used to your home, and watch them to see what they use most, and then give them more of it. Then you will know what works in your situation.

Make sure you have temps available to let your lizards act normally. And I have read your type of lizard is shyer than most, so try stapling lots of fake greenery around basking spots and such. They won't use something if its too exposed, and they feel scared to go use it, even if its something they really need.

Good luck. D.
